History
The Faculty of Medicine at Udayana University is one of the founding faculties established at the inception of Udayana University. Udayana University (Unud) was officially founded on August 17, 1962. Therefore, a brief overview of the university’s establishment is first provided. The Faculty of Medicine was among the initial faculties that laid the foundation for the establishment of Udayana University.
The founding of Udayana University began with the opening of the Faculty of Letters as a branch of Airlangga University, Surabaya, on September 29, 1958. One of the requirements for establishing a university was having at least four faculties—two in the sciences and two in the humanities.
The Faculty of Medicine was established to fulfill these requirements, alongside the Faculty of Letters, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Consequently, through the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science No. 104/1962 dated August 9, 1962, Udayana University was officially declared established as of August 17, 1962. Therefore, the founding of Udayana University is closely tied to the establishment of its Faculty of Medicine.
Initially, the Faculty of Medicine focused on providing medical education, specifically to train future physicians. Separately, the Public Health Study Program was established outside the Faculty of Medicine.
Given the available human resources and facilities at the Faculty of Medicine, and based on feasibility studies and societal needs, the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University / Prof. Dr. I G.N.G. Ngoerah General Hospital was established under the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 476/DIKTI/Kep/1996. This decree was issued on October 1, 1996. To date, the Internal Medicine Program has graduated more than 200 residents, who are now practicing in both public and private hospitals throughout Indonesia.
